Advanced Encryption Standard MIP for Trusted Platform Module (TPM)

Fast authentication and resistance to malicious attacks are key requirements for embedded security. Crocus' MLU is designed to provide a superior security functionality, known as Match In Place™ (MIP). MIP is a memory architecture that enables faster and tamper resistant security processing. MIP produces an innovative authentication method that never reveals information other than the level of match. MIP can be used in applications requiring secret PIN validation and biometric recognition. Other field of uses include specific cryptographic functions.

A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a specific secure microcontroller used to defend the internal data structures of a device against real intelligent attacks. TPM commonly use the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption algorithm. The AES MIP is an implementation of this algorithm using MIP storage space for keys and user-defined data. Taking advantage of the security of the MIP against side-channel attacks, the cipher key is kept safe against such attacks. Another advantage of this implementation is that the main operations are performed directly in the MIP memory, where the processor only provides input values and retrieves output values. Thus the estimations of area and power consumption for a TPM application are better than with existing implementations.

Deploying an RFID system necessitates multiple actors and many different components including Integrated Circuits (IC: tag chips), tag antennas, readers and application software. The IC or tag's chip delivers performance, security and memory to the tag. It is pre-programmed with a tag identifier (TID), a unique serial number personalized by the chip manufacturer, and includes a memory bank to store the items' unique tracking identifier (EPC). Depending on the application it may also include cryptographic functions and direct communication to the processor. Crocus CTe2MLU operates at low power levels, yet still provides sufficient backscatter signal to read tags at an extended range. It offers a flexible memory architecture that provides for the optimum allocation of EPC and User memory for different use cases. Benefits of Crocus CTe2MLU are also excellent performances and very small footprint and can be implemented in a low cost CMOS process.
